I had little trouble curbing my gardening enthusiasm in February, but give me a sunny day in early March, and I will move heaven and earth to get out there and do something. Even tasks I would have loathed in the autumn, like garden cleanup. In November it’s gray, bitingly cold, and every day there’s a little less daylight. In March … well, it can also be gray and bitingly cold, but at least the days are getting longer. And I had another reason for postponing fall garden cleanup: allowing leaves to remain on the ground improves the winter habitat for all kinds of wildlife. Laziness that’s good for the environment? I’m in!
That reminds me – I've got three new birdhouses to hang! It's officially time to sorta start working in the garden! I might just wait till it stops snowing today.
Speaking of birdhouses, we grew some gourds last year and saved a few that looked birdhouse-worthy. We just need to follow through on the rest of that project. Sorry to hear you're still having snow out your way!
Next year our yard will be reborn to an accessible and child-free after Laurie’s retirement. I will be dreaming of the garden until then! Love your reports, very inspiring!
Sounds like we’re listening to the same muse. It just feels nice to be outside again. I’ve been getting a jump on the weeds (which never seem to take a holiday) and pruning back dead canes on the roses. I’m not messing with live growth yet but it made me feel better to get rid of the dead stuff. Also: the first daffodils bloomed this week! 🎉
Hi Karen, it is nice to get out and about, isn't it? After our dreadful weekend weather today was warm enough to do some perennial pruning, which was quite satisfying. Hurray for daffodils!
I'm getting my early Spring garden fix by reading your blog because we're still under 2+ feet of snow, despite several melts. By early April I hope to be where you are now. How lucky you are to have bluebirds.

So cool! I'm excited to see how those gourd houses turn out! And thankfully it's mostly flurries today – there's not much collecting on the ground.
Spent three cold days whacking off dead hellebore leaves...just in time for 18 inches of snow coming this week.
Ugh! I feel for you. But at least you have one chore behind you ...

I look forward to seeing what you and Laurie do with the space, Terri.
...child-free space. I guess I can’t edit my comment!

I'm glad we can bring you a little hint of springtime, Tui!
